Wendy, the sunset is bathing the stragglers on the beach
into orange coloured silhouettes
the bend’s summer’s influx of beach bodies
empty out onto bars and beer joints
their partying continues from sunrise to moonset
most of them frat boys and highschoolers
searing their summer forever in memory
with too much sun, alcohol and one night stands
with those first year college girls
rock music spills out onto the car choked streets
as the opp black and whites SUV’s take their positions
bikinied girls draped in loose sarongs
strut down main street, in groups and arm in arm
their laughter much like ours used to be
best friends enjoying the lake’s offerings
until friends wasn’t what I wanted to be
was it then that you lost any desire for me?
our last time at the bend, I still remember
you walking that endless beach
your transistor radio in hand
kicking your flip flops off like a dancer
laughing, eyeing those muscled volleyball boys
the beach scene ended for me then
without courage to call you we dissolved
Wendy, now the sunset is drowning
on the horizon behind me
the street lights and parking lot lights
illuminating the lovers around me.
leaving, I hear your voice in the lake’s surf
the beach life that you lived forever
we should have been lovers that night
instead of friends never seen again
