Discarded Life

Poured what remained of his dreams
Into a cereal bowl –
Well, it was actually a McDonald’s cup
But it served the same function.

Figured if he could eat it
He could go on living it too
Digesting it square by square,
Calorie by calorie.

Except it had lost its taste
Or rather he’d lost his,
Unable to savor the sugar
Nor even the memories of carefree childhood.

So he tossed the box to the ground
And then watched the eyes of passersby
As they lit up with excitement
At the sight of nostalgic nourishment.

“Look, I see Life!
God I used to love it.”
Smiling then sauntering on
Without once noticing the hollow face.
